To make a suitable projection surface, the vellum will need to be prepped with a mix of Xylol and Silicon (see step by step below).

This will be your “screen” so it will be the size you want your screen to be PLUS some extra for mounting, which will be explained in detail later.Ģ.A projector will project the computer output straight up or bounced off a mirror threw the acrylic.ģ.The acrylic is clear, so a piece of drafting paper or Vellum is needed to project onto. The following design is not official, but will be the basis as I start the building.ġ.Take a piece of clear acrylic with laser cut (clear) edges. I will include pictures of the actual progress, videos and 3DS files once the building process begins. I did a quick CAD sketch of my initial design thoughts using 3DS Autodesk. I aim to create a clean and simple table design. This is a little tough to describe in words, so I made a simple diagram: This causes it to be wholly maintained in the acrylic. Once the IR light is inside the acrylic, it strikes the top and bottom surfaces of the acrylic at a near-parallel angle, and is subject to the effect known as total internal reflection. The LEDs are arranged around the outside of the sheet of acrylic so that they shine directly into the thin side surfaces. An FTIR (short for Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) setup involves three vital components: a sheet of transparent acrylic, a chain of infrared LEDs, and a camera with an IR filter. There are several different ways to make a multi-touch surface, but I will focus only one method: the FTIR screen. The device will allow Multi-touch interaction with a focus around educational applications.īefore we can get into the actual, physical construction of the table, it’s important to understand just how it works. To summarize, the final product produced will resemble a table with screen on top and hardware inside.

On the software end, both low level finger tracking or hand jester and high level software development will be in the Open-Source domain as a part of the Multi-touch device technology. On the hardware end, various materials (camera, projection screen, etc.) will be needed to construct the table. Through the developmental process, I will be exploring both the hardware and software side of Multi-touch computing. Within the design, a framework will be programmed that will make use of the table’s Multi-Input (Touch) ability. A Natural User Interface will act as the visual feedback where users can directly manipulate what is projected on screen.

A display table designed for Multi-touch interaction will be the point of my blog collaboration. My mission plan is to design a Multi-touch environment that allows an individual to work in a computer aid environment.

  • The camera is connected to a computer and a tracking application uses the camera image to track and create touch coordinates.

The projector is connected to a computer in order to display the software on the touch surface.A camera can be modified to only see the infrared spectrum of light from objects/fingers on the touch surface. The System has a projector for a visual feedback system where an image from a projector or LCD is projected or placed below the touch surface.Infrared light is used to distinguish between a visual image on the touch surface and the objects/fingers being tracked. An infrared camera is pointed at the touch surface and detects when fingers/objects touch the surface.
